Jakarta, ThedailyID — Alex Márquez claimed victory in the sprint race at the MotoGP Catalunya 2026 after defeating Pedro Acosta in a tense final-lap battle at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Saturday, May 16, 2026.
The BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP rider completed the 12-lap sprint race in 20 minutes and 2.258 seconds. He finished just 0.041 seconds ahead of Acosta, who rides for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.
Starting from pole position, Acosta immediately defended the lead at the opening corner. The young Spanish rider initially faced pressure from Johann Zarco, who climbed from fifth place to second during the early laps.
However, Alex Márquez gradually increased his pace and moved into second position before overtaking Acosta with six laps remaining.
The race later saw drama after Jorge Martín crashed while riding for Aprilia Racing. Race officials waved yellow flags after Martín’s bike became stuck in the gravel trap, forcing him to retire from the sprint.
Meanwhile, the battle between Alex Márquez and Acosta intensified near the closing stages. With only two laps remaining, Acosta briefly regained the lead and looked ready to secure victory in front of home fans.
Nevertheless, Alex Márquez responded quickly. The younger brother of Marc Márquez reclaimed first place on the final lap and successfully held the position until the checkered flag.
Third place went to Fabio Di Giannantonio from Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team after he overtook Raúl Fernández late in the race.
Defending world champion Francesco Bagnaia finished sixth after struggling to match the pace of the front runners.
The Catalunya sprint result provided an important momentum boost for Alex Márquez ahead of Sunday’s main Grand Prix race. In addition, the victory delighted local supporters who packed the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit throughout the weekend.
