Dark Web of Abuse: CNN Exposes 'Online Rape Academy'

Jakarta, ThedailyID — An investigation by CNN has uncovered disturbing online communities where users share methods to drug and sexually abuse women without consent. The report highlights how certain platforms continue to host and circulate exploitative content under loosely moderated environments.

CNN found that the pornography site Motherless.com hosts thousands of videos categorized under “sleep” themes. These videos often depict women appearing unconscious, while users attach hashtags such as “passedout” and “eyecheck,” suggesting deliberate verification of victims’ condition.

The platform recorded around 62 million visits in February alone, indicating the scale of its reach. In many cases, videos show individuals lifting victims’ eyelids to confirm they are unresponsive, raising serious ethical and legal concerns.

Beyond video content, CNN reported the existence of chatrooms linked to these communities. In these spaces, users allegedly exchange instructions, share experiences, and promote harmful practices related to drugging and assault.

One group, referred to as “Zzz,” reportedly included users offering substances described as odorless and tasteless. Some users also advertised livestreams of abuse, charging viewers approximately $20 per session.

The investigation traces the rise of such communities to earlier high-profile abuse cases. One of them involves Dominique Pelicot, who drugged his wife and allowed multiple men to assault her over several years.

Authorities later shut down the chatroom he used, known as “Without Her Knowledge” on the Coco platform. However, CNN reports that similar discussions have since migrated to other online spaces.

Several survivors have since come forward to share their experiences. Courts have sentenced multiple perpetrators to prison terms ranging from 8 to 11 years, reflecting the severity of these crimes.

One survivor, Zoe Watts, publicly shared her story after authorities sentenced her former husband to 11 years in prison for rape, sexual violence, and drugging. Her testimony highlights the long-term impact on victims and the importance of accountability.

Experts warn that these findings reveal gaps in content moderation and enforcement across digital platforms. As a result, harmful communities continue to evolve and relocate, making them harder to track.

CNN stated that investigations into these networks remain ongoing. The report calls for stronger oversight, platform responsibility, and greater awareness to prevent further harm.
