Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia has honored three fallen peacekeepers who died while serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon. The recognition highlights the country’s commitment to its personnel in global missions.
Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Agus Subiyanto awarded posthumous honors to the soldiers. He recognized their service and sacrifice during the mission.
The three personnel — Farizal Rhomadhon, Muhammad Nur Ikhwan, and Zulmi Aditya Iskandar — received rank promotions. In addition, they were awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal, a United Nations honor for peacekeepers who die in service.
Meanwhile, the government confirmed financial compensation for their families. The support includes continued salary payments, pensions, and education assistance for their children.
In total, the benefits may reach around Rp1.8 billion, or approximately $110,000. Therefore, the package reflects long-term support beyond immediate compensation.
TNI officials said the assistance shows the state’s appreciation. “This is a form of recognition for their dedication in maintaining global peace,” the military said.
The incident occurred amid rising tensions in southern Lebanon. In recent weeks, clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah have intensified.
At the same time, the United Nations continues its investigation. Authorities are still determining the exact cause of the strike that hit the UNIFIL post.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the incident. He emphasized that peacekeepers must be protected at all times.
“No peacekeeper should lose their life while serving under the United Nations flag,” he said.
Furthermore, Indonesia remains one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions. The country has deployed thousands of personnel across various conflict zones.
Overall, the incident highlights the growing risks faced by peacekeepers. It also underscores the challenges of operating in increasingly volatile regions.
