Floods and Tornadoes Hit South Kalimantan as 75 Hectares Remain on Fire

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Heavy rain has triggered flooding and extreme weather in several parts of South Kalimantan, while forest and land fires continue to burn across the province. Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) says the overlapping disasters require serious attention.

Berton SP Panjaitan, acting head of BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, reported that approximately 75 hectares of land in South Kalimantan remain affected by fires.

Banjar Regency is among the areas experiencing extreme weather. According to Berton, the conditions have affected 175 people.

Flooding has also hit several areas in Sumatra, including Subulussalam in Aceh and multiple regencies in North Sumatra. Berton urged local governments to prepare for further hydrometeorological disasters during periods of heavy rainfall.

BNPB reported the following numbers of people affected by flooding:

  • Subulussalam, Aceh: 2,345 people
  • Labuhanbatu, North Sumatra: 2,600 people
  • Asahan, North Sumatra: 2,025 people
  • Deli Serdang, North Sumatra: 730 people
  • Banjar, South Kalimantan: 175 people affected by extreme weather

In Asahan, flooding hit Sei Silau Tua and Bangun Sari villages in Setia Janji District. Heavy rain upstream caused the Silau Tua River to overflow into residential areas. Authorities reported approximately 405 affected households and 405 affected houses.

In Deli Serdang, rivers overflowed and a levee collapsed, worsening the flooding. BNPB data recorded around 146 households, or 573 people, affected. The local disaster management agency assessed the affected areas, coordinated with village and district officials, and prepared a public kitchen.

Meanwhile, heavy rain and a tornado struck several villages in Banjar Regency. The affected areas included Sungai Alat Village in Astambul District, as well as Sungai Rangas Hambuku, Sungai Rangas Ulu, Sungai Batang Ilir, and Penggalaman villages in Martapura Barat District.

The extreme weather damaged homes and toppled trees, affecting approximately 35 households. Banjar’s disaster management agency conducted assessments, coordinated with local authorities, and prepared to distribute emergency supplies.

BNPB has urged local governments to remain alert to further flooding, landslides, and other hazards associated with heavy rainfall.
