Jakarta, ThedailyID — Student groups gathered around Jakarta’s Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout on Wednesday afternoon, October 28, 2026, as demonstrations took place across several locations in the capital.
Members of the Komite Selamatkan Daulat Rakyat (SADAR) arrived along Jalan Sudirman but were stopped near the UOB Building before reaching the roundabout. Other groups representing universities across Indonesia, including Padjadjaran University and the University of Indonesia, arrived at the site around 2:26 p.m. local time.
The students gathered near the roundabout’s fountain, delivered speeches, and displayed posters and banners outlining their demands. By around 3:02 p.m., more demonstrators had arrived, while thousands of police and military personnel guarded the area to prevent crowds from moving closer.
The protesters presented five demands to President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. These included declaring a national disaster status, ensuring the state budget serves public interests, lowering education costs, eradicating corruption, collusion, and nepotism, and ending the militarization of civilian spaces.
Demonstrations also took place near the Horse Statue area, where a group of around 25 people arrived with a command vehicle outside the Bank Syariah Indonesia building at approximately 1:10 p.m. The vehicle had left the location by 2:40 p.m.
Meanwhile, members of the National Coalition of Indonesian Women (KNPRI) established a complaint post outside the parliamentary complex on Wednesday afternoon. They called on the House of Representatives to follow up on a Constitutional Court ruling related to the controversy surrounding Vice President Gibran’s diploma.
The group also opened a public complaint post for reports of alleged diploma violations involving members of parliament. Members displayed a banner urging motorists to honk if they supported Gibran’s impeachment. The group said it had submitted a request for a meeting with lawmakers.
Jakarta Metro Police urged all groups to protect public facilities and respect other people’s rights during the demonstrations. Police spokesperson Budi Hermanto said public spaces serve multiple purposes, including demonstrations, work, education, and daily activities.
He emphasized that everyone should maintain order so people can express their views safely and peacefully while allowing other public activities to continue.
