Prabowo to Meet Singapore Foreign Minister Amid Haze and Gas Disputes

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to meet Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan on Wednesday afternoon, October 28, 2026, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said.

Teddy said Vivian arrived in Indonesia on Tuesday morning and requested a meeting with Prabowo. The meeting’s location and detailed agenda have not yet been disclosed.

“Since yesterday morning, Singapore’s foreign minister suddenly came to Indonesia and requested time to meet the president. He will be received briefly this afternoon,” Teddy said on Wednesday, October 28.

He added that Prabowo continues to prioritize good relations and communication with friendly countries, particularly Indonesia’s neighbors in Southeast Asia.

Before the planned presidential meeting, Vivian met Indonesian Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir at the Foreign Ministry building in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 27.

The visit comes amid growing frustration in Singapore and Malaysia over haze caused by forest and land fires in Indonesia. The fires have been described in the report as the country’s worst in 11 years.

Singapore is considering strengthening its transboundary haze laws to hold parties linked to the fires accountable. Last week, Singapore also released investigation findings that allegedly implicated 10 Indonesian companies in the fires.

The visit also comes amid tensions over Indonesia’s decision to stop exporting natural gas to Singapore. Djoko Siswanto, head of Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas regulator SKK Migas, said the gas supply would instead be redirected to domestic needs, particularly electricity generation.

The redirection would involve two routes: moving gas from Natuna to Batam and reducing supplies from Sumatra that have supported electricity needs in Batam, Bintan, and Sumatra.

The planned meeting provides an opportunity for the two governments to maintain communication as they navigate these regional and bilateral issues. However, officials have not confirmed whether the haze or gas supply will be discussed.
