Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia is awaiting President Prabowo Subianto’s decision on extending the MotoGP Mandalika contract for another five seasons, Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said on Monday, October 12, 2026.
The current five-year agreement has reached its end following the 2026 Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia on Sunday, October 11. MotoGP Mandalika first took place in 2022, completing five editions this year.
The existing agreement includes an option to extend the race for another five seasons, potentially through 2031. However, the parties have yet to reach a new agreement.
“We will wait for President Prabowo Subianto’s decision on the contract extension. Hopefully, he will announce it himself,” Erick said in an official statement from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Erick also expressed support for keeping the international motorcycle racing event in Indonesia.
“We will certainly support it because this is a good event,” he said.
According to Erick, hosting MotoGP in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, also helps stimulate the local economy. The event attracts domestic visitors and international tourists, bringing economic activity to the Mandalika area.
Meanwhile, MotoGP has included Mandalika in its official 2027 Grand Prix calendar, despite the uncertainty surrounding the contract renewal.
The 2027 Indonesian Grand Prix is scheduled for October 29–31 at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit. If it proceeds as planned, the race will mark the sixth consecutive year that Mandalika hosts a MotoGP round.
The future of the event beyond the current agreement remains subject to the government’s decision.
