Jakarta, ThedailyID — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the capital’s status as a global city requires a fast and accurate disaster response system.
Pramono made the statement while opening Jakarta’s 2026 Regional Disaster Management Coordination Meeting on Tuesday, October 6.
The meeting took place at Hotel Aryaduta Menteng in Central Jakarta. It carried the theme “Disaster Emergency Status: Challenge or Opportunity.”
“As a global city, disaster management is a very sensitive issue for any city. The accuracy and speed of our response are very important,” Pramono said on Tuesday, October 6.
He stressed that one agency cannot handle disasters alone. Jakarta needs coordination between local agencies, the central government, security forces, businesses, volunteers, communities and residents.
Pramono said one current concern is the risk of fires in densely populated areas. He urged relevant agencies to strengthen prevention and public awareness amid the prolonged dry season and El Niño conditions.
“The potential for fires is currently very high, especially in densely populated areas,” Pramono said. He asked all agencies to remain alert and take preventive measures.
Flood management is another priority for the Jakarta administration. The city government is coordinating with the central government and surrounding regions, particularly on rivers that cross administrative boundaries.
The Jakarta government is focusing on land acquisition for the development of 13 major rivers. Meanwhile, the central government is responsible for constructing river retaining structures.
Pramono said the city is handling land acquisition along several rivers, including the Ciliwung, Krukut and Cakung Lama rivers.
He also said disaster management should continue after the emergency phase ends. Recovery efforts must address residents’ needs through coordination among agencies.
The Jakarta Social Affairs Agency, Health Agency, Education Agency and the Agency for Cooperatives, SMEs and Trade are among the agencies involved in post-disaster response.
Meanwhile, Jakarta BPBD Executive Head Marulitua Sijabat said the meeting also reviewed evacuation plans, logistics, infrastructure and support for displaced residents.
The 2026 coordination meeting aims to strengthen Jakarta’s preparedness and cross-sector response to various disaster risks.
