Jakarta, ThedailyID — US President Donald Trump described the White House as “shabby” and “embarrassing” before he launched a major renovation project.
Trump made the remarks during a 75-minute interview with TIME Magazine published Thursday, October 1. He discussed several issues, including Iran, the White House renovation, the Supreme Court, the Kennedy Center and possible pardons.
Trump also highlighted the changes made to the historic building since he returned to office. He said the renovations were necessary because several areas needed repairs.
The president described the White House before the work as a “shabby, embarrassing place” and an “ugly mess.”
Trump has added gold finishes to parts of the Oval Office. Similar design elements have also appeared in other rooms.
He also redesigned the Rose Garden. The renovation added stone surfaces and gave the area a terrace-style appearance inspired by his Mar-a-Lago residence.
Another project created the so-called “Presidential Walk of Honor” along the West Colonnade. The area features biographies of former US presidents written in Trump’s distinctive style.
Trump has also added large flagpoles and a helicopter landing area on the White House grounds. Workers also replaced flooring in the Palm Room and renovated the Lincoln Bedroom bathroom with marble.
The president is also overseeing construction of a new ballroom measuring about 90,000 square feet. Trump said the building could also serve as a military complex.
TIME questioned whether the extensive renovation was necessary while many Americans face difficulties paying their bills and meeting daily expenses.
Trump defended the project by pointing to the symbolic importance of the White House. He called the building an important symbol of the United States.
“It is a very special symbol. It is a symbol of America. It is a symbol of our greatness,” Trump said.
Trump also claimed parts of the building were damaged when he returned to office. He said exterior trim had fallen, doors had problems and some locks were broken.
He further claimed that the US Secret Service had recommended demolishing and rebuilding the Oval Office. Trump said he rejected that proposal.
“This place used to be very dirty and messy, and now it is perfect,” he said.
