Jakarta, ThedailyID — Jakarta ranks 140th among 1,000 cities worldwide in the Global Cities Index 2026 released by Oxford Economics.

The index, released Monday, September 28, assesses cities across five main pillars: economy, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance.

Jakarta’s strongest performance came from its human capital ranking. The city placed 23rd globally in the category.

Jakarta also ranked 59th for its economy. However, its scores for quality of life and the environment remained significantly lower.

Here is Jakarta’s ranking across the five categories:

  • Human Capital: 23rd
  • Economy: 59th
  • Governance: 372nd
  • Environment: 553rd
  • Quality of Life: 561st

Overall, New York retained the top position in the 2026 Global Cities Index. London ranked second, followed by Paris in third.

Despite Jakarta’s lower rankings in quality of life and environment, Oxford Economics projects strong economic growth for the city over the coming decades.

The index projects a significant increase in Jakarta’s high-income population. The city could add more than 1.7 million high-income households over the next 25 years.

The projection highlights Jakarta’s potential for continued economic expansion, even as the city faces challenges in environmental conditions and quality of life.
