Jakarta, ThedailyID — Norway’s King Harald V will be laid to rest at the Royal Mausoleum inside Akershus Fortress in Oslo following a state funeral on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
Harald died on August 28 at the age of 89. His funeral ceremony will begin at Oslo Cathedral at 1 p.m. local time.
After the ceremony, Harald’s coffin will travel to Akershus Castle. The medieval fortress overlooks Oslo Bay.
The procession will then continue to the Royal Mausoleum. The royal family will hold a private ceremony there before the burial.
The mausoleum serves as the final resting place for several members of Norway’s royal family.
Harald will be buried alongside members of his family. They include his father, King Olav V, and his mother, Crown Princess Märtha.
His grandparents, King Haakon VII and Queen Maud, are also buried at the site.
Harald will have a special resting place unlike a conventional coffin. He and his wife, Queen Sonja, ordered a custom sarcophagus in 2024.
Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta designed the sarcophagus. Architect Kjetil Trædal Thorsen led the project.
The project reportedly cost around 20 million Norwegian kroner, or about US$2 million. That is equivalent to roughly Rp35 billion.
Details of the sarcophagus design have not been publicly released, according to Town & Country.
The custom structure will eventually serve as the shared resting place of Harald and Queen Sonja.
Harald became Norway’s king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. He remained on the throne for more than three decades.
His funeral marks the end of an era for Norway’s royal family as the country prepares to honor its late monarch.
