Jakarta, ThedailyID — Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a series of ballistic missile attacks against US forces at Al Azraq Air Base in Jordan on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
The IRGC said the missiles targeted facilities used to maintain, prepare and deploy US F-35, F-16 and F-15 fighter jets.
The attack marks another escalation between Iran and the United States. The latest strikes came amid a fragile ceasefire and stalled negotiations.
“In an operation aimed at punishing the aggressor, a large number of solid- and liquid-fueled ballistic missiles hit the maintenance, preparation and deployment sites for F-35, F-16 and F-15 fighter jets, as well as their hangars, causing severe damage to the enemy,” the IRGC said on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, according to semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim.
Iranian state and semi-official media reported that the missile launches began Tuesday night and continued into early Wednesday.
Al Jazeera also reported that several missiles were seen crossing the Jordan-Syria border area.
Jordan, meanwhile, said its air defenses intercepted at least eight Iranian missiles over Amman and other parts of the country.
Footage circulating online appeared to show one of the most intense Iranian missile barrages so far. The attacks reportedly involved a larger number of missiles than previous strikes.
The attack followed a separate US operation against five Iranian oil tankers.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces destroyed the vessels after the IRGC targeted US Navy warships with ballistic missiles on two occasions over two days.
According to CENTCOM, the US warships avoided both attacks. No American personnel were injured.
US forces then targeted the M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman. They also struck the M/T Derya near Kharg Island.
CENTCOM said Iran used the tankers as part of a “multibillion-dollar shadow network” that allegedly funds the IRGC and its regional proxy groups.
“Iran has no means to defend these vessels,” CENTCOM said.
The United States carried out a similar operation on September 5. CENTCOM said it destroyed three Iranian tankers after the IRGC attempted to target a US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer.
The latest exchange of attacks raises fresh concerns over the stability of the wider Middle East. It also adds pressure to efforts aimed at maintaining the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.
