256 Students in Jombang Fall Ill After Eating Free Nutritious Meals

Jakarta, ThedailyID — A total of 256 students at SMPN 1 Kabuh in Jombang, East Java, developed suspected food poisoning symptoms after eating a Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) meal on Wednesday (02/09/2026).

The students ate the meal at around 11:30 a.m. Symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and dizziness began appearing later in the afternoon.

Jombang Health Agency Chief dr. Hexawan Tjahja Widada said residents initially considered the symptoms a common digestive problem. The school later collected data and found a significant increase in cases.

“The incident started yesterday, Wednesday (02/09). At first, people thought it was ordinary diarrhea, but after we collected the data, we found that the number of cases was high,” Hexawan said, Friday (04/09/2026).

Health authorities recorded 256 students with symptoms as of Friday. Hexawan said medical treatment remains the agency’s priority.

“256. The number is still changing, so we will see whether more students come to the community health center,” he said.

Seven students required intensive care at a local community health center because they felt weak. Hexawan said their condition had improved and they mainly needed rehydration.

Around 74 other students remained under outpatient monitoring at local health facilities, including community health centers and private clinics.

Most students received treatment independently or through outpatient care. Health officials also expect more reports if other students develop symptoms or seek medical attention.

After treating the patients, the health team began a field investigation to determine the source of the suspected mass food poisoning. Investigators will examine food preparation, distribution and ingredient quality.
