Jakarta, ThedailyID — Five students from Universitas Brawijaya have developed ADAPT-V, a smart vest designed to detect physiological stress in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and provide a calming response.
The vest combines sensors, artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technology. It monitors heart rate and movement patterns to identify signs of rising stress that may precede a tantrum.

When the system detects these signals, ADAPT-V automatically applies gentle pressure similar to Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT). The approach aims to provide a calming sensation and help reduce escalating stress.
Unlike manually operated therapeutic vests, ADAPT-V is designed to work in real time. The device can also connect to a smartphone application, allowing parents and therapists to monitor the child’s condition remotely.
The innovation was developed by five students from Psychology and Electrical Engineering backgrounds. Their multidisciplinary approach combines an understanding of children’s behavior with technology designed to monitor physiological responses.
ADAPT-V is still in the development and testing stage. The team is assessing detection accuracy, pressure safety and user comfort before the vest can be used more widely.
The project shows how AI and IoT can support assistive technology for children with ASD. By detecting physiological changes in real time, ADAPT-V aims to provide an additional tool for parents and therapists in managing early signs of stress.
