How to Read People Without Actually Reading Minds

Jakarta, ThedailyID — What if reading minds is not actually about reading minds at all? Mentalist Oz Pearlman says the key is learning how people think and behave.

In a TED YouTube video titled “The Art of Reading Minds,” published on the TED YouTube channel, Pearlman explains how he uses mentalism to observe people and understand their reactions.

Pearlman, who describes himself as a professional mind reader, makes one thing clear: he has no supernatural abilities. He says he has spent roughly three decades studying and “reverse-engineering” the human mind.

“I can’t read minds. What I can do is read people,” Pearlman said in his TED Talk on TED’s Youtube Channel, Thursday (03/09/2026).

Reading People, Not Minds

Pearlman explains that understanding how people think can reveal what they may be thinking. His demonstrations show how reactions, word choices and changes in behavior can provide useful clues.

He also applies his approach to an everyday problem: forgetting someone’s name shortly after meeting them.

The Three-Step Method to Remember Names

Pearlman introduces a simple method called “Listen. Repeat. Reply.” The first step is to genuinely listen when someone introduces themselves.

People often fail at this because they are already thinking about what they will say next. As a result, they may never properly register the person’s name.

“It’s not a memory issue. You didn’t forget the name, you never knew it,” Pearlman said.

The second step is to repeat the person’s name during the conversation. This reinforces the name in memory and helps confirm its pronunciation.

The final step is to connect the name with something meaningful. Pearlman suggests using a compliment, asking about the spelling or creating a personal association.

Confidence Also Plays a Role

Beyond remembering names, Pearlman says mentalism can teach a broader lesson about confidence.

He argues that believing in your ability to succeed can influence how you perform, both on stage and in everyday life.

“The number one factor in success, both on stage and in every facet of my life, is an unshakable belief that it will work,” Pearlman said.

His talk ultimately presents “mind reading” as a skill built around observation, attention and understanding human behavior rather than supernatural powers.
