Jakarta, ThedailyID — A total of 5,209 Israelis entered the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem throughout August 2026, according to data from the Jerusalem Governorate.
During the same period, Israeli forces killed two Palestinians and detained 114 others, including five children. The data was released by the governorate on Tuesday, September 1.
The Jerusalem Governorate said Israeli police provided protection for Israelis entering the compound. One of the highest daily figures came on August 13, when 751 people entered Al Aqsa.
The report also documented Jewish religious rituals inside and around the mosque’s gates. Israeli authorities issued five orders barring Palestinians from entering the Al Aqsa compound during the month.
Israel has allowed its citizens to enter the site under police protection since 2003. The Islamic Waqf Department in Jerusalem has repeatedly called for the incursions to stop and maintains that Al Aqsa is an Islamic holy site.
The governorate also recorded 83 Palestinians injured and 44 attacks targeting Palestinians and their property. Authorities documented 40 demolition and land-clearing operations targeting homes, buildings and land.
Israeli authorities also issued 86 demolition or work-stoppage notices and orders during August.
The developments come amid rising tensions in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Palestinians accuse Israel of seeking to alter the character and identity of East Jerusalem, including the area surrounding Al Aqsa.
The situation has remained tense since Israel launched its war in Gaza in October 2023. Raids, arrests and attacks on Palestinians and their property have continued across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
