Why Are Most Commercial Airplanes Painted White?

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Most commercial airplanes around the world have one thing in common: their main fuselage is predominantly white.

The choice is not simply about appearance. According to aircraftnerds, white paint offers several technical and operational advantages, from controlling heat to making damage easier to detect.

One major benefit is thermal control. White reflects visible light rather than absorbing as much of its energy as darker colors do. This helps reduce heat buildup inside the aircraft, particularly when planes are parked under direct sunlight on the tarmac.

White exteriors can also make maintenance inspections easier. Cracks, dents, corrosion, and other physical damage can stand out more clearly against a white surface. Fuel or oil leaks may also leave visible stains that technicians can identify during inspections.

Another factor is resistance to ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Aircraft regularly operate at high altitudes where they are exposed to sunlight and UV radiation. White surfaces can maintain their appearance longer than some darker-colored finishes, potentially reducing the need for frequent repainting.

White can also improve visibility during search-and-rescue operations. In the event of an emergency landing or accident, a predominantly white aircraft may be easier to spot from the air against various backgrounds, including land and water.

There is also a branding advantage. A white fuselage provides a neutral background that allows an airline’s logo, name, and other visual elements to stand out more clearly from a distance.

Despite these benefits, not every aircraft is entirely white. Airlines can still use distinctive colors and designs to build their identity. However, the widespread use of white shows that the color serves practical purposes beyond simply making an aircraft look clean and professional.
