Jakarta, ThedailyID — Italy is once again offering abandoned homes for just €1, as part of an effort to attract new residents and revive a declining historic town.

The latest scheme comes from Naro, a medieval town in Sicily. Through its “Case a 1 Euro” program, both Italian citizens and foreigners can apply to purchase selected abandoned properties at a symbolic price.

However, the €1 price tag does not mean buyers can immediately move in. Most of the properties require significant renovations, with buyers responsible for repair costs and other expenses linked to the purchase.

Applicants must also follow local planning and building safety regulations. They are required to complete renovations within the timeframe set by the program.

Additional costs include notary fees, registration charges and cadastral taxes.

Naro sits in Agrigento Province in southwestern Sicily. The hilltop town offers views of the surrounding Sicilian landscape and the sea, while its historic center features medieval and Baroque architecture.

One of its landmarks is Chiaramontano Castle, a medieval fortress located at the highest point of the town.

The initiative aims to bring abandoned properties back into use while revitalizing Naro’s historic center. Similar €1 home schemes have previously launched in Italian towns such as Sambuca di Sicilia and Salemi.

For Naro, the program is part of a broader effort to address population decline while encouraging investment and the restoration of neglected buildings.

So, while the house itself may cost just €1, buyers will need a much larger budget for renovations and related expenses before turning one of these properties into a home.
