Jakarta, ThedailyID — At least 47 US citizens are missing after flash floods and landslides struck Nepal on Wednesday (26/8). They are among at least 341 foreign nationals who remain unaccounted for following the disaster.
Nepal tourism board spokesperson Sunil Sharma told the Associated Press that the missing foreign nationals include 142 Indians, 12 Britons, 34 Australians, and 53 Ukrainians.
Seventeen Malaysian travelers, nine South Koreans, four South Africans, two Portuguese nationals, and several others are also reportedly missing or unreachable.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the situation has made it difficult to obtain accurate information as Nepal deals with the disaster.
“Our thoughts are with everyone who is worried about their loved ones,” Albanese said, as quoted by AFP, Thursday (27/08).
The disaster struck on Wednesday after flash floods and landslides hit parts of Nepal. Initial reports suggested that an earthquake may have triggered ice and rock avalanches into the Lhende Khola River, which runs through Nepal and Tibet.
However, further analysis by the US Geological Survey found no earthquake occurred before the landslide and flash floods.
Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has deployed military personnel, police, helicopters, and medical teams to assist with emergency operations and search efforts.
