Jakarta, ThedailyID — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung called for continued development and greater equality as the capital marked Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day on Monday, Aug. 17.
Pramono led the ceremony at Jakarta City Hall in Central Jakarta. He said independence should be treated as a responsibility to deliver real benefits for society.
“Independence is not only a legacy to remember and celebrate. It is a responsibility that must be protected and filled with real work for society, the nation and the country,” Pramono said.
Jakarta’s economy grew 5.52% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, contributing 16.32% to Indonesia’s national gross domestic product. Inflation remained at 2.5%.
Pramono said the economic growth must also benefit residents more evenly. The city is targeting a place among the world’s top 50 cities by 2030.
“Development in Jakarta is directed at driving economic growth, expanding employment opportunities, reducing inequality and ensuring that no resident is left behind,” he said.
Education and Infrastructure
Jakarta recorded the country’s highest Human Development Index at 85.05 in 2025. The provincial government plans to expand access to education and improve welfare through several programs.
These include the Jakarta Smart Card Plus, Jakarta Outstanding Student Card, diploma debt relief, labor-intensive programs and support for the Sekolah Rakyat initiative.
The city is also advancing several major infrastructure projects. These include the Kelapa Gading-Manggarai LRT, the second phase of the MRT from Bundaran HI to Kota Tua, and the Dukuh Atas pedestrian deck.
Jakarta also plans to improve transportation links to the Thousand Islands. Starting in 2027, Transjakarta will professionally manage sea transportation services to the island chain.
Meanwhile, the city continues to promote waste sorting, optimize 3R waste facilities and strengthen preparedness for the dry season.
Support for Disaster Victims
Jakarta also extended assistance to communities affected by recent disasters in East Nusa Tenggara.
The provincial government deployed healthcare workers and provided Rp3.8 billion in humanitarian aid for disaster victims. The funds came from voluntary donations by civil servants at Jakarta City Hall.
For Independence Day celebrations, Jakarta also introduced a special Rp8 Transjakarta fare and free entertainment at several locations, including Monas, Bundaran HI, Kota Tua and the Thousand Islands.
Pramono said the spirit of independence today should focus on cooperation and public service.
“For the Jakarta provincial government, independence means providing the best services so that people feel protected, safe, comfortable and connected to their city through the spirit of ‘Jaga Jakarta,’” he said.
