Jakarta, ThedailyID — Lionel Messi has opened up about his father Jorge Messi’s death and hinted that he is questioning his future in football.
Jorge Messi died on Saturday, August 8. He had played a major role in his son’s career from an early age.
Messi shared an emotional message through Instagram following his father’s death. He said he was still struggling to accept the loss.
“I still can’t believe you’re gone,” Messi wrote in his message to his father.
The Argentina star also suggested that his grief has made him question whether he will continue playing football for much longer.
“I don’t know how to continue. All I’ve ever done is play football, and now I seriously doubt whether I’ll keep doing it much longer,” Messi said.
Jorge Messi remained an important figure throughout his son’s career. He supported Messi during some of the biggest moments of his football journey.
Messi also recalled how his father encouraged him to play at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“You kept asking me to play in that last World Cup,” Messi wrote.
Messi also expressed regret over failing to retain the World Cup title with Argentina.
Despite the loss, Messi has returned to Inter Miami. He was named among the substitutes for the club’s Leagues Cup match against Leon on Thursday, August 13.
The match took place at Miami’s Nu Stadium.
Messi’s return drew attention from fans following his father’s death. One supporter commented on Inter Miami’s Instagram post, writing, “Messi is back.”
Messi’s comments, however, have raised questions about how long he intends to continue his professional career.
The 39-year-old forward has yet to announce any decision about retirement. His latest message instead reflects uncertainty as he deals with the loss of his father.
