Jakarta, ThedailyID — Authorities have closed all hiking trails at Mount Gede in West Java from August 7 to August 11, 2026, following a wildfire that burned part of the Suryakencana Meadow.
The Mount Gede Pangrango National Park Authority (BB TNGGP) announced the closure under Circular No. SE.18/2026. Officials said the temporary shutdown will support recovery efforts and ensure the safety of hikers, park staff, and nearby communities.
Hikers who booked trips during the closure period will receive full refunds.
“Refund request links will be sent through our official WhatsApp account to the group leader listed during the booking process,” the park authority said in a statement.
Officials urged visitors to monitor the park’s official channels for updates on when the trails will reopen.
The fire broke out on the western side of Suryakencana Meadow, near Mount Gumuruh, at around 3:00 p.m. local time on August 6.
Emergency teams, volunteers, and local residents responded immediately to contain the blaze.
Firefighters and volunteers used wet cloths and freshly cut vegetation to suppress the flames. They brought the fire under control after about three hours.
Authorities have kept personnel at the site to watch for remaining hotspots and prevent the fire from reigniting.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the wildfire and the total area affected.
Park officials said they will reopen the trails only after confirming that the ecosystem has recovered and the area is safe for visitors.
