5 FIFA Nations Dump Infantino as Support for Re-Election Starts to Crumble

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Support for Gianni Infantino’s bid for another term as FIFA president continued to weaken after five national football associations withdrew their endorsements ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) became the first federation to publicly revoke its support on Monday. Although it initially backed Infantino’s candidacy, the association said it no longer supported his re-election.

Shortly afterward, England’s Football Association (FA) also withdrew its endorsement. The decision came after learning that UEFA was considering legal action over a controversial FIFA proposal.

In a letter sent to FIFA on July 31, UEFA said it was actively considering legal proceedings, arbitration, or regulatory complaints over the matter.

Meanwhile, Serbia’s Football Association (FSS) and the Swedish Football Association (SvFF) also pulled their support. Both organizations criticized Infantino for proposing the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative without consulting FIFA members.

Georgia later joined the growing list of dissenting federations. As of Tuesday, five FIFA member associations had officially withdrawn their backing.

According to Sky Sports, more federations could announce similar decisions in the coming days. The report said the coordinated moves aim to increase pressure on Infantino ahead of the FIFA presidential race.
