Bell's Palsy vs Stroke: Key Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face. Although it often resembles a stroke, the two conditions have different causes and require different medical evaluations.

People with Bell’s palsy may notice one side of the face drooping, making it difficult to smile, blink, or raise an eyebrow. Symptoms usually develop within hours or over several days.

Unlike a stroke, Bell’s palsy affects the facial nerve, also known as the facial or seventh cranial nerve, which controls facial muscles.

A stroke, by contrast, often causes additional symptoms. These may include weakness in an arm or leg, slurred speech, confusion, or reduced consciousness. Anyone experiencing these signs should seek emergency medical care immediately.

Common symptoms of Bell’s palsy

Bell’s palsy can cause several symptoms, including:

  • Sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face
  • Difficulty smiling, closing one eye, or making facial expressions
  • Pain around the ear or jaw on the affected side
  • Increased sensitivity to sound in one ear
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Reduced sense of taste, especially on the front of the tongue
  • Drooling because of weakened facial muscles
  • Changes in tear or saliva production, causing watery or dry eyes and mouth

Doctors recommend seeking medical attention as soon as these symptoms appear. Early treatment can speed up recovery and reduce the risk of complications.

What causes Bell’s palsy?

The exact cause remains unclear. However, experts believe inflammation and swelling of the facial nerve play a major role.

Several viral infections, including the herpes simplex virus, have also been linked to the condition. Researchers believe these infections may trigger nerve inflammation in some people.

Most patients recover fully over time, but recovery can take weeks or months depending on the severity of nerve damage.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly, and attending routine health check-ups may help reduce the risk of neurological conditions and support early diagnosis.
