Jakarta, ThedailyID — Many cat owners have experienced the same scene: just as work begins, their cat climbs onto the laptop and settles in for a nap.
While the behavior may seem mischievous, animal behavior experts say there are several natural reasons why cats are drawn to laptops.
1. Laptops provide warmth
One of the biggest reasons is simple, laptops generate heat.
Cats naturally seek warm places to rest, making a laptop an ideal spot for a quick nap.
Animal behavior consultant Amy Shojai said cats are attracted to warm electronic devices and may even view a laptop on your lap as an extension of their favorite resting place.
2. They want your attention
Not every cat climbs onto a laptop because it wants to sleep.
Sometimes, the behavior is simply a way to get your attention.
According to Shojai, cats quickly learn that sitting on a keyboard makes their owner stop working. Whether they receive food, toys, or affection, the response reinforces the behavior.
3. Your typing triggers hunting instincts
Moving fingers, clicking keys, and shifting hands can resemble the movements of small prey.
Cats instinctively track subtle motion. As a result, they may become curious and move closer whenever you start typing.
4. Your scent is on the keyboard
Animal psychologist David Sands believes scent also plays an important role.
Cats have an exceptional sense of smell and are naturally drawn to objects that carry their owner’s scent.
Sands added that cats may also leave their own scent behind, effectively marking the laptop as part of their territory.
“It’s all about ownership,” he explained.
How to keep your cat off the keyboard
Experts recommend avoiding punishment if the habit becomes disruptive.
Instead, cat behavior consultant Marilyn Krieger suggests creating a comfortable resting spot beside your workspace. A soft cushion or warm blanket can encourage your cat to stay nearby without blocking your keyboard.
At the same time, make the keyboard less inviting by closing the laptop when it is not in use or limiting access to it.
Some owners also use toy laptops designed for cats to redirect their pets’ attention while they work.
Understanding why cats love laptops can make the behavior easier to manage. With a little patience, both you and your feline companion can share the workspace more comfortably.
