Jakarta, ThedailyID — Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Chairman Yahya Cholil Staquf, widely known as Gus Yahya, joined Indonesia’s official delegation to attend the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The delegation traveled to Iran at the request of President Prabowo Subianto. It includes People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani, Foreign Minister Sugiono, PBNU Chairman Yahya Cholil Staquf, and Muhammadiyah chairman Syafiq Mughni.
PBNU official Achmad Fahrur Rozi confirmed Yahya’s participation on Friday, July 10.
“Gus Yahya, the PBNU chairman, is among those assigned to travel to Iran,” Fahrur said.
As of publication, Syafiq Mughni had not publicly commented on the trip. CNN Indonesia reported that it had contacted him and other Muhammadiyah officials but had not received a response.
Earlier, Ahmad Muzani said the delegation would not stay overnight in Iran.
According to Muzani, the group will attend the funeral ceremony on Friday morning, visit the burial site, and hold official meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister and Parliament Speaker before returning directly to Jakarta.
“We will attend the funeral in the morning, visit the burial site, meet Iran’s foreign minister and parliament speaker, and then return straight to Jakarta,” Muzani said.
