Jakarta, ThedailyID — A Boeing 737 cargo aircraft operated by K2 Airways reportedly went missing off the coast of Karachi, Pakistan, on Tuesday night after experiencing a technical problem during its flight.
The aircraft was flying from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, to Pakistan. It was carrying five crew members.
Pakistan’s aviation authorities said the aircraft developed a navigation system problem at around 9:18 p.m. local time.
Air traffic controllers attempted to guide the aircraft. However, they lost communication shortly afterward.
Authorities said the aircraft was about 155 nautical miles, or 287 kilometers, west of Karachi when contact was lost.
Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 suggested the aircraft may have crashed into the Arabian Sea southwest of Karachi after making irregular altitude changes.
Reuters also reported that tracking data showed the aircraft made a sharp descent during its final recorded moments.
Authorities have launched a search and rescue operation in the Arabian Sea. They are working with several agencies, including K2 Airways.
“We continue to pray sincerely for the safety of our colleagues,” K2 Airways said in a statement.
Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the incident. They have also not released any information about possible casualties.
