Jakarta, ThedailyID — Lionel Messi praised Argentina’s resilience after the defending champions staged a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Argentina captain shared his reaction on Instagram shortly after the match, applauding his teammates for refusing to give up.
“This team never gives up. This match was crazy again. This team is incredible. Let’s go!” Messi wrote.
Argentina faced a difficult challenge at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday. Egypt took a two-goal lead through Yasser Ibrahim in the 15th minute and Mostafa Ziko in the 67th.
However, Argentina mounted a remarkable comeback by scoring three goals in just 13 minutes. Cristian Romero started the rally in the 79th minute before Messi equalized four minutes later. Enzo Fernández then completed the turnaround with a stoppage-time winner.
Argentina controlled 58% of possession and recorded 17 shots, including seven on target. Meanwhile, Egypt managed four attempts, with two testing the goalkeeper, but remained dangerous on the counterattack.
With the victory, Argentina advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will face Switzerland. The Swiss booked their place in the last eight after defeating Colombia in a penalty shootout.
