Hamas Dissolves Gaza Government, Paving Way for Civil Administration

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Hamas has officially dissolved its government in the Gaza Strip after nearly two decades in power, a move that could pave the way for a technocratic body to oversee civilian administration.

The group announced the decision on July 7, saying it would facilitate the transition to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG).

Mohammed Al Farra, head of the government’s emergency committee, submitted his resignation and formally dissolved the Emergency Government Committee.

In a statement released by the Gaza Government Media Office, Al Farra said the move demonstrates Hamas’ commitment to implementing previously agreed arrangements and ensuring a smooth administrative transition.

Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the group no longer wanted to bear responsibility for governing Gaza.

“Hamas has taken this step to remove any pretext for the occupation, which continues its aggression and destruction,” Qassem said.

He added that Hamas is ready to transfer governing responsibilities to the NCAG as soon as the committee can begin operating.

Meanwhile, NCAG chairman Ali Shaath welcomed the announcement. He said the committee stands ready to assume its national responsibilities once it receives the necessary resources and operational capacity.

The NCAG has operated outside Gaza for months because Israeli authorities have not allowed its members to enter the territory.

The announcement came shortly after Israeli state media reported that senior Hamas official Khalil Al Hayya met an adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump in Qatar.

The reported meeting has fueled debate in Israel over the future of Gaza and Hamas’ political role after years of conflict.

Israeli commentator Avi Issacharoff argued that Hamas continues to maintain political influence in Gaza despite nearly three years of war. He also said the group has been rebuilding its military capabilities.
