Jakarta, ThedailyID — Algeria became the latest team eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing 2-0 to Switzerland in the Round of 32 at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada, on Friday.
Breel Embolo opened the scoring for Switzerland in the 10th minute. Dan Ndoye doubled the lead early in the second half to seal the victory.
The win sends Switzerland into the Round of 16. Murat Yakin’s side will face either Colombia or Ghana in the next round.
Algeria joined a growing list of nations whose World Cup campaigns ended in the opening knockout stage.
Earlier, Croatia suffered a dramatic defeat against Portugal. Austria also exited the tournament after losing to Spain.
The United States eliminated Bosnia and Herzegovina with a 2-0 victory to secure its place in the last 16.
Several traditional football powers also failed to advance. Germany suffered a surprise defeat against Paraguay, while Morocco knocked out the Netherlands.
Brazil also survived a major scare against Japan. The South American side came from behind before completing a comeback victory to reach the Round of 16.
Three Round of 32 matches still remain on the schedule. Argentina will take on Cape Verde, Australia will face Egypt, and Colombia will meet Ghana. The winners will complete the Round of 16 lineup.
