Italian City Bans Flip-Flops for Tourists, Violators Face $290 Fine

Jakarta, ThedailyID — An Italian coastal city has introduced a new rule banning tourists from wearing flip-flops in certain public areas. Visitors who ignore the regulation could face fines of up to €250, or around Rp4.7 million.

Local authorities introduced the measure to improve public safety and preserve the city’s historic environment. Officials said flip-flops increase the risk of slips and accidents, especially on steep stone stairways, uneven streets, and cliffside pathways that attract thousands of visitors every year.

The regulation applies in designated areas with challenging terrain. Tourists who wear inappropriate footwear while exploring those locations may receive warnings or financial penalties from local authorities.

Officials also urged visitors to wear closed-toe shoes or other sturdy footwear when walking through the city’s historic districts and scenic routes.

The city government said the rule is not intended to discourage tourism. Instead, it aims to reduce injuries and encourage responsible travel while protecting both visitors and the local community.

Several European tourist destinations have introduced similar regulations in recent years. Many have adopted stricter rules to manage overtourism, protect cultural heritage, and improve public safety.

Authorities reminded travelers to check local regulations before visiting popular destinations. Following local rules can help visitors avoid unnecessary fines while enjoying a safer travel experience.
