Jakarta, ThedailyID — The Grammy Awards will introduce a dedicated category for Asian pop music as the genre continues to expand its global influence.
According to Billboard, the Recording Academy has officially announced Best Asian Pop Music Performance as one of five new categories for the 69th Grammy Awards.
The new award will recognize outstanding performances in Asian pop music, including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop. To qualify, songs must feature one or more Asian languages in a significant way.
The Recording Academy said it created the category to reflect the growing impact of Asian pop on the global music industry. Moreover, the genre continues to shape music culture across multiple regions.
The addition marks a major milestone for Asian artists and music markets. In recent years, Asian pop has attracted larger international audiences and achieved increasing commercial success worldwide.
Meanwhile, the Recording Academy also unveiled four other new categories. They include Best Latin Song, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Traditional Folk Album.
As a result, the total number of Grammy categories will increase to 100.
In addition, the Academy updated several eligibility rules ahead of the next awards season.
The organization raised the maximum number of submissions allowed for Best New Artist consideration from three to four. Furthermore, it lowered the minimum percentage of newly recorded material required for album eligibility from 75 percent to 66 percent.
The changes reflect the Academy’s efforts to adapt to evolving trends in the music industry while recognizing a broader range of artists and musical styles.
