Iran Captain Says U.S. Tensions Have Overshadowed World Cup Joy

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Iran captain Mehdi Taremi said ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States have diminished the festive atmosphere of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking ahead of Iran’s opening Group G match against New Zealand, Taremi admitted the team has felt pressure since arriving in the United States. He said the situation has undermined the values of peace and unity that the World Cup traditionally represents.

“I have felt the tension from the first moment we arrived at this World Cup,” Taremi said. He added that political tensions make it difficult for players to fully enjoy the tournament experience.

Iran’s preparations have faced several disruptions in recent weeks. The team moved its training base from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico, while visa issues affected members of the Iranian delegation.

Meanwhile, protests from members of the Iranian diaspora have accompanied the team’s arrival in Los Angeles. Security measures around the squad have also increased ahead of the tournament.

Despite those challenges, Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei urged players to remain focused on football. He emphasized that the team’s mission is to represent all Iranians and bring moments of joy to supporters around the world.

Taremi echoed that message and stressed that the national team respects Iranians both at home and abroad. He said the squad hopes to unite supporters through its performances on the pitch.

Iran will open its World Cup campaign against New Zealand in Group G. The match comes amid heightened political scrutiny, making Iran’s participation one of the tournament’s most closely watched storylines.
