Want to Be a Better Leader? Avoid These 5 Trust-Killing Habits

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Trust is one of the most valuable assets a leader can build. However, experts say certain behaviors can gradually weaken credibility and damage relationships within a team.

While trust takes time to earn, leaders can lose it much faster through repeated actions. Here are five habits that often undermine trust in the workplace.

1. Breaking Promises

Leaders who fail to follow through on commitments risk damaging their credibility. When employees repeatedly see promises go unfulfilled, they may begin to question whether leadership can be trusted.

2. Poor Communication

Clear communication helps teams stay aligned and informed. In contrast, vague instructions or a lack of transparency can create confusion and uncertainty among employees.

3. Acting Inconsistently

Employees expect leaders to apply standards fairly and consistently. However, leaders who frequently change expectations or treat people differently can erode confidence within their teams.

4. Avoiding Accountability

Strong leaders acknowledge mistakes and take responsibility for their decisions. Meanwhile, leaders who shift blame to others often lose respect and credibility.

5. Micromanaging

Many leaders micromanage in an attempt to improve results. However, excessive oversight can signal a lack of trust in employees and reduce motivation over time.

Experts note that trust grows through consistent actions rather than words alone. Therefore, leaders who communicate openly, honor commitments, and take responsibility for their decisions are more likely to earn lasting respect from their teams.
