Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesian police deployed intelligence officers to redirect a planned student protest away from Jakarta’s Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout on Thursday.
Authorities said the move aimed to prevent traffic disruptions in one of the capital’s busiest areas. The demonstration was organized by a coalition of student groups that planned to gather near the landmark.
Police officers approached protest coordinators before the rally began. They encouraged participants to move the demonstration to an alternative location.
According to police, the decision focused on maintaining public order and ensuring smooth traffic flow around the HI Roundabout.
Meanwhile, student representatives insisted that the location held symbolic value for their protest. They argued that the site has long served as a focal point for public demonstrations in Jakarta.
Despite the negotiations, police continued efforts to persuade participants to relocate. Authorities also increased security measures around the area to prevent congestion.
The demonstration formed part of a broader student movement criticizing several government policies. Protesters planned to deliver a number of demands during the rally.
Traffic officers monitored key roads surrounding the roundabout throughout the day. In addition, police coordinated with local authorities to manage vehicle flow and avoid major disruptions.
The HI Roundabout sits at the heart of Jakarta’s business district and frequently experiences heavy traffic. As a result, authorities often impose restrictions on large gatherings in the area.
Police urged demonstrators to exercise their right to protest peacefully while respecting public order and the rights of other road users.
