Jakarta, ThedailyID — The AH-64 Apache has returned to global headlines after one of the US Army’s attack helicopters went down near the Strait of Hormuz, an incident that further heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. Both crew members survived and rescuers evacuated them safely.
The Apache is one of the world’s most advanced attack helicopters. The US Army developed the aircraft for combat missions, armed reconnaissance, and close air support operations.
Originally introduced in the 1980s, the helicopter remains a key component of US military operations. Over the years, Boeing has continuously upgraded the aircraft with new sensors, weapons, and targeting systems.
The latest variants can carry AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, Hydra 70 rockets, and a 30mm M230 chain gun mounted beneath the nose. As a result, military forces often use the Apache against armored vehicles, fortified positions, and mobile targets.
The helicopter also features advanced night-vision equipment and target-tracking systems. Consequently, crews can operate effectively during both daytime and nighttime missions.
An AH-64 Apache can reach speeds of around 170 mph (274 km/h). In addition, its twin-engine design allows it to continue operating in challenging combat environments.
Military experts often refer to the Apache as a “tank killer” because of its ability to destroy armored vehicles from long distances. Therefore, many countries continue to operate the aircraft decades after its introduction.
The helicopter recently played a major role in US operations around the Strait of Hormuz. Washington deployed Apache units to patrol the strategic waterway and counter potential threats to commercial shipping routes.
The latest incident sparked international attention because it occurred during a period of heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. While investigators initially examined multiple possible causes, US officials later said an Iranian drone likely brought down the aircraft.
Following the incident, US President Donald Trump vowed to respond. The episode subsequently fueled a new round of military exchanges between the two countries.
Despite the loss, the AH-64 Apache remains one of the most capable and widely used attack helicopters in modern military aviation. Its combination of firepower, mobility, and advanced technology continues to make it a key asset on battlefields around the world.
