Jakarta, ThedailyID — Lionel Messi made an immediate impact after coming off the bench as Argentina defeated Iceland 3-0 in a FIFA Matchday friendly on Wednesday, June 10.
Valentin Barco, Messi, and Thiago Almada scored for the reigning world champions. The victory gives Argentina positive momentum ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Argentina controlled possession from the start. However, Iceland threatened first through Mikael Egill Ellertsson in the fourth minute, although his effort sailed over the crossbar.
Argentina broke the deadlock in the eighth minute. Barco fired a powerful volley into the bottom-right corner to put his side ahead 1-0.
The South American side continued to create chances throughout the match. In the second half, Alexis Mac Allister struck the post in the 62nd minute after receiving a pass from Lautaro Martinez.
Four minutes later, Martinez also hit the woodwork as Argentina searched for a second goal.
Coach Lionel Scaloni introduced Messi in the 69th minute. The veteran forward quickly changed the game.
Just one minute after entering the pitch, Messi helped create a chance for Martinez. Although the striker missed the opportunity, Iceland’s goalkeeper fouled him in the process.
As a result, Argentina earned a penalty. Messi stepped up and calmly converted the spot kick to double Argentina’s lead.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner continued to influence the match. Then, in the 86th minute, he helped create Argentina’s third goal.
Messi delivered a precise through ball to Rodrigo De Paul inside the penalty area. De Paul then squared the ball to Thiago Almada, who finished from close range.
Argentina maintained control until the final whistle and secured a comfortable 3-0 victory.
The friendly serves as Argentina’s final preparation before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which begins on June 12. Argentina will compete in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.
