Jakarta, ThedailyID — Filmmaker Ari Aster has revealed that he previously wrote a prequel story for Hereditary, one of the most acclaimed horror films of the past decade.
However, the director said he has no plans to turn the story into a movie. Instead, he described it as a detailed backstory that helped shape the events seen in the original film.
Aster shared the information during a recent interview while discussing his creative process. According to him, the prequel explored the history of the Graham family and the sinister cult that plays a central role in Hereditary.
The filmmaker explained that he developed extensive lore for the movie before production began. As a result, he already knew many details about the characters and events that occurred long before the film’s timeline.
Although fans have long speculated about a sequel or prequel, Aster indicated that he prefers to leave much of the story unexplored on screen. He believes some mysteries work better when audiences fill in the gaps themselves.
Released in 2018, Hereditary became a breakout success for entertainment company A24. The film earned widespread praise for its psychological horror, unsettling atmosphere, and performances led by Toni Collette and Alex Wolff.
The movie follows a grieving family that uncovers disturbing secrets after the death of its matriarch. As the story unfolds, supernatural forces begin to influence their lives in increasingly terrifying ways.
Meanwhile, Aster has continued to build a reputation as one of modern horror’s most influential directors. Following Hereditary, he directed Midsommar and Beau Is Afraid.
Even without a planned adaptation, Aster’s comments have sparked fresh interest among fans eager to learn more about the hidden history behind Hereditary. For now, though, the prequel remains an untold chapter known only to its creator.
