Jakarta, ThedailyID — A massive fire swept through the Pasar Jiung area in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Monday night, destroying hundreds of buildings and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate.
Authorities suspect an electrical short circuit triggered the fire. Police are still investigating to determine the exact cause.
The fire broke out in the densely populated settlement behind Pasar Jiung in Kebon Kosong, Kemayoran. Witnesses said the flames initially appeared small before spreading rapidly through the neighborhood.
The blaze destroyed around 250 semi-permanent buildings. Local authorities reported that between 500 and 679 residents were affected by the incident.
Firefighters deployed dozens of fire engines and more than 100 personnel to contain the flames. Crews faced difficulties because the fire spread through a densely packed residential area.
Three residents suffered injuries during the incident. Medical teams treated two victims at Hermina Hospital in Kemayoran, while another received treatment at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital.
Police said preliminary findings point to an electrical short circuit as the likely cause of the fire. However, investigators continue to gather evidence and question witnesses.
Many displaced residents sought temporary shelter after losing their homes and belongings. Authorities are still assessing the total financial losses caused by the disaster.
