Jakarta, ThedailyID — Singapore recorded a sharp increase in COVID-19 infections, with weekly cases rising to around 12,000.
Singapore’s Ministry of Health and the Communicable Diseases Agency reported that infections climbed significantly during the week of May 11–17, 2026.
Authorities said the estimated number of weekly cases rose from around 8,700 in the previous week to 12,000.
Average daily hospitalizations also increased during the same period, although officials said the healthcare system remains under control.
The government stated that the recent rise likely came from waning population immunity rather than the emergence of a more severe variant.
Health authorities identified LF.7 and NB.1.8 as the dominant variants currently circulating in Singapore. Both belong to the Omicron lineage.
Officials said there is currently no evidence showing the variants cause more severe illness compared to previous strains.
The Health Ministry encouraged older people residents, medically vulnerable individuals, and people living in care facilities to receive updated vaccinations.
Authorities also advised people experiencing symptoms to wear masks in crowded places and avoid unnecessary social interactions.
Singapore stopped publishing regular Covid-19 updates earlier after the global situation stabilized. However, officials resumed reporting because of the recent increase in infections.
Several neighboring Asian countries have also reported rising Covid-19 cases in recent weeks, including Thailand and China.
Despite the surge, Singapore has not announced new lockdown measures or major travel restrictions.
The government said it would continue monitoring the situation closely while urging the public to remain cautious and maintain basic health precautions.
