Jakarta, ThedailyID — A magnitude 5 earthquake struck the Tanimbar Islands region in Maluku on Thursday morning.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake occurred at around 05:49 local time.
The epicenter was located southwest of the Tanimbar Islands at a depth of 109 kilometers beneath the sea.
Authorities stated that the quake did not trigger a tsunami warning.
Several residents reportedly felt moderate shaking in nearby areas, although no immediate reports of casualties or major damage emerged shortly after the earthquake.
Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes because the country sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active seismic zones.
BMKG urged residents to remain calm and continue monitoring official information from authorities.
Officials also reminded the public to stay alert for possible aftershocks following the quake.
