JAKARTA, Thedaily.ID – The 2026 FIFA World Cup has started drawing concern even before the tournament begins. This time, extreme heat has become a major issue.
The competition will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, several stadiums could experience dangerously high temperatures during matches.
The World Weather Attribution (WWA) research group warned about possible heat stress risks for players. Therefore, FIFA has started preparing preventive measures early.
WWA reported that around 26 matches could take place in temperatures above 26 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, nine games may be played in stadiums with limited cooling systems.
Several cities in the United States have become key areas of concern. Miami, Kansas City, and East Rutherford face the highest risk of extreme heat during matchdays.
Open-air stadiums in those cities often record intense temperatures in the afternoon. As a result, players could struggle to maintain fitness and performance levels.
FIFA is currently developing special safety protocols to protect players during the tournament. In addition, the organization is considering possible schedule adjustments.
FIFA also wants to maintain the overall quality of matches. Extreme temperatures can affect stamina, match intensity, and player recovery.
The 2026 World Cup is expected to become the biggest edition in football history. The tournament will feature more participating nations and will run across three host countries.
