Jakarta, ThedailyID — Brandon Clarke has died at the age of 29, leaving the NBA community in shock and mourning.
The death of the Memphis Grizzlies forward was confirmed by the team and his agency, Priority Sports, on Tuesday. Authorities have not officially announced the cause of death.
Multiple US media outlets reported that Clarke was found dead at a residence in the Los Angeles area following a medical emergency response. Investigators are reportedly examining the possibility of a drug overdose after drug paraphernalia was allegedly discovered at the scene.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed condolences following the news.
“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke,” Silver said in an official statement.
Priority Sports also released an emotional tribute.
“He was so unique in the joy he brought to all of those in his life,” the agency wrote.
Clarke spent all seven of his NBA seasons with Memphis after being selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder before being traded on draft night.
The Canadian forward quickly became one of the Grizzlies’ key rotation players. He earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors during the 2019–2020 season.
Before entering the NBA, Clarke played college basketball with the Gonzaga Bulldogs and gained recognition as one of the top forwards in college basketball.
Throughout his NBA career, Clarke averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds across 309 games. However, injuries heavily impacted the later stages of his career.
He suffered a torn Achilles injury in 2023 and later dealt with knee and calf injuries that limited him to only two appearances during the 2025–2026 season.
The news triggered tributes from players, teams, and fans across the basketball world. Former teammates and NBA organizations shared condolences on social media following the announcement.
