Jakarta, ThedailyID — Dua Lipa officially filed a lawsuit against Samsung and demanded $15 million, or more than Rp260 billion, in damages over alleged unauthorized use of her image in marketing campaigns.
According to reports from Variety, Dua Lipa registered the lawsuit at the United States District Court for the Central District of California on Friday.
The legal dispute began after the singer discovered that Samsung had allegedly used a photo of her face prominently on television product packaging since last year.
Dua Lipa’s legal team claimed the company used her visual identity to boost product sales without permission, compensation, or any official partnership agreement.
The lawsuit stated that the image appeared in large-scale promotional campaigns tied to Samsung television products.
“Ms. Lipa’s face was used prominently in a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without compensation, and without any voice, control, or input from her,” the court filing stated.
The disputed image reportedly came from a backstage photo taken during the Austin City Limits Music Festival in 2024.
According to the filing, Dua Lipa holds full copyright ownership over the photograph. She also stressed that she never approved the use of her image for Samsung’s advertising campaign.
The case escalated after Dua Lipa reportedly asked Samsung to stop using the image. However, her legal team claimed the company refused the request and showed little concern over the complaint.
The lawsuit includes several allegations, including copyright infringement, trademark violations, violation of California publicity rights, and claims under the federal Lanham Act.
So far, Samsung has not released an official public response regarding the lawsuit.
The case has quickly attracted public attention because it involves one of the world’s biggest technology companies and one of pop music’s most recognizable stars.
