Jakarta, ThedailyID — KAI Logistik is studying plans to increase container freight capacity through the Ronggowarsito train service to support growing industrial logistics demand in Semarang and surrounding areas. The initiative also aims to strengthen goods distribution connectivity across Central Java.
Director of Business Development Aniek Dwi Deviyanti said the company is responding to rising demand from manufacturers that require large-scale and scheduled cargo distribution. According to her, optimizing the Ronggowarsito freight service could provide a more efficient and reliable transport option compared to other logistics modes.
The service currently operates on the Jakarta–Semarang round-trip route. In addition, the company plans to strengthen logistics integration in Klari, Karawang. This integration aims to support industrial distribution efficiency in Karawang while helping shipping lines reposition cargo more effectively.
Under the proposed development plan, the Ronggowarsito freight train would operate once every two days using 25 flat wagons. The configuration would allow the train to transport up to 50 TEUs or around 900 tons in a single trip. As a result, the service could handle up to 13,500 tons of cargo each month starting in May 2026.
KAI Logistik mainly targets the manufacturing and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors through this expansion. Both sectors require stable handling and high delivery accuracy to maintain supply chain performance. Therefore, the company aims to connect production hubs in Jakarta and Karawang directly with industrial centers in Semarang.
The company views the initiative as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen rail-based logistics within Indonesia’s supply chain network. Moreover, KAI Logistik believes improving freight services along Java’s northern corridor remains important for supporting national industrial competitiveness.
Aniek also emphasized that the project goes beyond increasing transportation volume. Instead, the company wants to build a more resilient and sustainable logistics ecosystem.
“Rail-based logistics offers safer, more reliable, and more sustainable transportation. Through green logistics, rail transport can help reduce carbon emissions and road traffic burdens,” she said.
The company added that the initiative aligns with its commitment to supporting environmentally friendly logistics systems while improving connectivity across strategic industrial areas such as Semarang.
