FIFA President Insists Iran Will Play World Cup in US as Planned

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Gianni Infantino, FIFA President, reaffirmed that Iran will compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and play its scheduled matches in the United States, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.

He delivered the statement during the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, where uncertainty had surrounded Iran’s participation due to escalating conflict involving the US and Israel.

“Of course Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Infantino said, stressing that the matches will take place in the US as originally planned.

The decision follows earlier concerns from Iranian officials, who had questioned whether the team could travel safely. Some proposals even suggested moving Iran’s matches to another host country.

However, FIFA rejected those options and maintained its original tournament structure.

The 2026 World Cup will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran is scheduled to play all its group-stage matches in US cities, including Los Angeles and Seattle.

The situation reflects broader political complexities surrounding the tournament. Diplomatic tensions have already affected participation at official events, including the absence of Iranian representatives at FIFA meetings due to travel restrictions.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has expressed support for Iran’s participation, stating he is “OK” with the team competing in the tournament.

Despite the political backdrop, FIFA continues to position the World Cup as a platform for unity. Infantino emphasized that sport should remain separate from geopolitical conflict.

Still, questions remain over logistics, security, and fan access as the tournament approaches. Observers note that cross-border travel, visa policies, and diplomatic relations could influence the overall experience.

For now, FIFA’s stance remains unchanged. Iran will take part in the 2026 World Cup and compete on US soil as scheduled.
