Jakarta, ThedailyID — Thailand plans to end its 60-day visa-free policy as authorities seek to tighten screening of incoming tourists. The move comes amid concerns over misuse of the extended stay period.
Officials said the current policy, which allows visitors from dozens of countries to stay up to 60 days without a visa, has led to cases of overstaying and unauthorized activities. As a result, the government is reviewing the duration to ensure better control over tourist entry.
Previously, Thailand extended visa-free stays from 30 days to 60 days to boost tourism recovery after the pandemic. The policy successfully attracted more international visitors and supported the country’s economic rebound.
However, authorities now aim to balance tourism growth with stricter regulation. By reducing the visa-free duration, the government expects to filter visitors more effectively while maintaining a steady flow of tourists.
In addition, officials are considering adjustments to immigration procedures to improve monitoring and compliance. These measures are expected to strengthen oversight without significantly disrupting tourism demand.
The tourism sector remains a key pillar of Thailand’s economy, contributing significantly to national income. Therefore, the government emphasized that any policy changes will aim to sustain growth while ensuring better governance.
Further details on the revised visa policy, including the new duration and implementation timeline, are expected to be announced in the coming months.
