Jakarta, ThedailyID — Iran has confirmed it is “100 percent ready” to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, responding to recent remarks from Donald Trump.
The statement was delivered by government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani through state broadcaster IRIB on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
“We are 100 percent ready to participate,” Mohajerani said. She added that preparations for Team Melli are already underway and fully coordinated. According to Mohajerani, Iran’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has handled all logistical requirements. These include travel, facilities, and team preparations for the tournament.
The World Cup will take place across United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Therefore, Iran is expected to play matches on U.S. soil despite ongoing tensions.
Moreover, Mohajerani said preparations are being carried out under the direction of the sports minister. The focus remains on ensuring the team performs successfully during the tournament.
The statement also appears to respond to political pressure from the U.S. Recently, Trump’s envoy Paolo Zampolli suggested replacing Iran with Italy.
“I confirm that I have suggested to Trump and [Gianni Infantino] that Italy replace Iran in the World Cup,” Zampolli said. “I am Italian, and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri play in the U.S.”
However, FIFA has not made any changes to the qualified teams. Infantino has also reiterated that Iran will take part in the tournament.
“The Iranian team will definitely come,” Trump said. “We hope the situation will be peaceful by then. But Iran must come.”
Previously, uncertainty emerged after rising tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali had even suggested last month that participation was not guaranteed.
In addition, Iran reportedly requested to move its matches out of the United States to Mexico. However, FIFA rejected the proposal and kept the original schedule unchanged.
Despite the political backdrop, Iran has continued preparations without disruption. The latest statement reinforces the country’s commitment to compete on football’s biggest stage.
Overall, Iran’s response highlights a firm stance. While geopolitical tensions persist, the team remains on track for the 2026 World Cup.
