The earthquake struck at around 11:27 a.m. local time. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, the quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers and was centered about 49 kilometers northeast of Sigi.

The powerful shaking triggered panic across Central Sulawesi, particularly in Palu and nearby districts. Many residents rushed out of their homes, offices, and public buildings to seek safety.

Authorities also recorded damage to residential buildings in several affected areas. Emergency teams immediately began assessing the extent of the destruction and assisting residents impacted by the disaster.

Meanwhile, local disaster management officials urged residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks. They also advised people to avoid damaged structures until safety inspections are completed.

The earthquake revived memories of the devastating 2018 disaster that struck Palu, Sigi, and Donggala. As a result, many residents chose to stay outdoors for several hours after the tremor.

Officials continue to monitor conditions in the affected areas while emergency responders provide assistance to injured residents and assess infrastructure damage.
