Jakarta, ThedailyID — Vaginal health is not only about hygiene. What you eat may also play a role in supporting the balance of bacteria in the vaginal microbiome.
A healthy vaginal environment is generally acidic and dominated by beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus. When this balance is disrupted, the risk of irritation, unusual discharge, odor, yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis may increase.
Obstetrician and gynecologist Anna Cabeca said probiotic-rich foods can introduce beneficial microorganisms while also providing nutrients that supplements may not offer.
“Probiotic-rich foods can introduce beneficial microorganisms while providing nutrients that supplements may not,” Cabeca said, as quoted by Woman’s World, Tuesday (25/08).
Here are seven probiotic foods that may support a healthy microbiome:
1. Greek Yogurt
Plain Greek yogurt without added sugar can provide beneficial bacteria, including Lactobacillus.
2. Kefir
This fermented drink contains various beneficial bacteria and is considered a diverse source of probiotics.
3. Kimchi
Fermented Korean cabbage contains lactic acid bacteria and dietary fiber that can support gut health and the immune system.
4. Sauerkraut
Fermented cabbage contains naturally occurring lactic acid bacteria that may contribute to microbial diversity.
5. Tempeh
Indonesia’s fermented soybean food provides plant-based protein and beneficial bacteria produced during fermentation.
6. Miso
This fermented soybean seasoning is made using koji and can provide microorganisms associated with fermentation.
7. Fermented Pickles
Not every pickle contains probiotics. Naturally fermented vegetables can retain beneficial bacteria, while vinegar-based pickles generally do not provide the same probiotic benefits.
However, diet is only one factor affecting vaginal health. Hormonal changes, antibiotics and sexual activity can also influence the vaginal microbiome.
